The innovation analysts at StartUs Insights recently looked into emerging technologies and up-and-coming startups working on solutions for the packaging sector. As there are many startups working on a wide variety of solutions, we decided to share the top 5 promising young companies from around the world working on bio-based material solutions.

For our 5 top picks, we used a data-driven startup scouting approach to identify the most relevant solutions worldwide.

Lignopure – Lignin

When utilized in packaging production, lignin as an organic polymer increases the barrier properties of finished products, especially against UV rays. Thanks to its moderate thermal stability and biodegradability, lignin is a good choice in terms of supply materials for producing bags, packaging films and coatings.

Founded in 2019, the German startup Lignopure creates industrially compostable and thermally stable lignin compounds to produce packaging, tableware, and bathroom goods. Moreover, Lignopure’s solutions have also been effectively tested for biopolymer composites and packaging adhesives use cases.

The other companies are:

  • ADBio Composites – Polylactic Acid
  • Origin Materials – Bio-PET
  • TBM – Limestone
  • Universal Biopack – Starch
